History of Edgewood UMC
The Edgewood United Methodist Church, in Ripplemead, Virginia, was organized in 1954. The first Pastor was the Rev. Sam L. Jones. The brick church, as pictured above, was constructed and the opening service was held on August 5, 1956.
This little church, a haven to many families in the village for fifty years, was planning to close in September 2006 since it had only six persons attending regularly. At this point, several neighbors (Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Catholic) asked that the doors remain open to give the community a chance to help save this special little church. A Cook-out for the entire neighborhood was the first project to recovery.
Everyone pitched in to paint the basement rooms and replace a damaged wall. The outdoor music sound system was restored. New carpet, new hymnals, tables and chairs have been donated. Wiring has been upgraded and plants added to the landscape. Several fund-raisers ( a gigantic yard sale and spaghetti suppers) provided funds for a heat pump installed in the fall of '07.
In just over one year attendance is over 30 with 7 new members. Rev. Jim Jenkins serves as pastor and Sunday School is held each Sunday. Bible study and Choir practice are regular activities.
This has been the story of a little church sadly needing people. The response has been overwhelming and the prospects for it looks very good. The people who have made this possible will tell you that the rewards to them have also been awesome and the good "neighborhood" feeling is beyond measure.
